Marantz 2325 Restoration

A Marantz 2325 restoration involves the following work:

Repair any faults.

Replace all electrolytic capacitors (not just some), incl. the main power supply filters (unlike other capacitor types, electrolytics have a rather limited life-expectancy).

Replace tantalum capacitors with audio-grade capacitors.

Replace carbon resistors in low-level amplifier stages with metal-film resistors.

Replace the protection relay.

Replace the power switch.

Replace other faulty, hard-done-by, or unreliable parts (for example, resistors discoloured due to heat).

Replace the differential transistor pairs in the power amp stages.

Test and, if necessary, replace the output transistors.

Inspect and repair failing solder joints.

Replace the vellum paper behind the tuning dial plate (this tends to discolour with age).

Replace all the lamps.

Clean all controls.

Clean the faceplate and knobs (generally clean-up the receiver).

Adjust the bias point and DC offset, perform other adjustments as per the service manual.

Do a proper AM/FM calibration.

Provide jumpers for the PRE-OUT / MAIN-IN jacks. These jacks have troublesome built-in switches that are a common source of intermittent sound. The jumpers bypass these switches.

Thoroughly test the receiver, including all inputs / outputs and switches to root-out any hidden problems.

After the restoration, we measure several performance parameters to ensure the receiver meets or exceeds the original specifications. We will supply you with a copy of the test results specifying:

Total harmonic distortion at 1 watt per channel, both channels driven, at 1 kHz.

Total harmonic distortion at 125 watts per channel, both channels driven, at 1 kHz and 13 kHz.

Frequency response at 20 Hz, 10 kHz and 20 kHz referenced to 1 kHz at 1 watt into 8 Ω, both channels driven.

FM stereo separation at 1 kHz (left-channel attenuation referenced to the right-channel, and vice versa).

Needless to say, restorations are a time-consuming and painstaking endeavour. Amplifiers and receivers can be on the bench for a couple days or more, all things considered.

We are pretty serious about keeping the restoration on budget; By now we are well aware that sometimes we have to spend a few dollars more for parts than we expected. Within reason, we absorb those expenses to keep the restoration at the quoted cost. However, in quite rare cases where major, unique parts (the power transformer or tuning gang, for example) are bad or inexplicably missing altogether, we might have to hunt-down replacements and this could cost a bit extra. As mentioned, this is rare (I've never seen a 2325 with a bad transformer) but it could happen.

Is It Worth It?

Almost all vintage receivers are built to a better standard of quality than brand-new receivers. In fact, I don't think it is possible to buy a new receiver that is built to the same standard of quality as a Marantz 2325. If such a receiver does exist, the price tag will be in the thousands of dollars, you can be certain about that.

We will restore your 2325 to like-new condition for a fraction of that cost.
