Luxman R-117 Gallery



The output transistors for one channel. It is a fully-complementary arrangement. There are two NPN and two PNP transistors. By my reckoning, the Luxman R-117 uses a class-G power amplifier. There are two sets of rail voltages; ±74 VDC and ±102 VDC. When the output-power requirement cannot be met by the ±74 V supply, the ±102 V supply is switched to the collectors of the output transistors. Two of the six big transistors in the above image handle the collector voltage switching.


During the 1960's and 1970's Luxman produced many examples of fine high quality, high end audio components. Like many other manufacturers, for the most part the quality of their products declined during the 1980's. However, Luxman is again producing very high end, exotic (i.e, expensive!) amplifiers (both tube amps and solid-state), preamplifiers and digital components. The swank B-1000F monoblock power amplifiers will set you back in the neighbourhood of $55000!
