Luxman L-100 Gallery

When you slide the L-100 chassis out of it's wooden case, the first thing that strikes your eye is the power supply filter capacitors. They're huge! They must be the biggest 15000 uF / 80 V capacitors I've ever seen. Physically, they are much larger than they need to be- but in electronics, that's almost always a good thing.

The L-100 has a touch-mute circuit. If my memory serves me correctly, you touch the metal part of the volume control and the faceplate simultaneously, and the amp mutes (I think I remember seeing a light blinking while the amp was muted; could be wrong, though). I do remember that I accidentally muted these amps more than once while adjusting the volume. Fortunately, you can defeat the touch-mute circuit with a switch that is on the back panel.
During the 1960's and 1970's Luxman produced many examples of fine high quality, high end audio components. Like many other manufacturers, for the most part the quality of their products declined during the 1980's. However, Luxman is again producing very high end, exotic (i.e, expensive!) amplifiers (both tube amps and solid-state), preamplifiers and digital components. The swank B-1000F monoblock power amplifiers will set you back in the neighbourhood of $55000!

As amps go, these are fairly complex. There are lots of interconnections and a whole slew of capacitors that are starting to get pretty old. Although there are probably people reading this who will say, "my amp runs great, and it's never been serviced," from what I've seen it's difficult for me to imagine there are any L-100's in original condition that don't have something wrong with them, even if it isn't immediately obvious...
When they are healthy, they are a great sounding amp. And they should be; they were very expensive! Our specs database lists them at USD $995 / CAD $1495 in 1976 (although they may have retailed for slightly less in some locations).
