The Dynaco PAT-5 preamplifier before restoration.

The power supply.

The long input selector switch can be seen running from left to right below the centre of this picture.

The faceplate before being cleaned-up.

The input selector switch knob (on the left) and the speaker selector switch knob (on the right) are not original. A couple knobs were missing, as can be seen in the first picture. However, we managed to find two knobs that matched the others reasonably well. Although this preamp really did clean up nicely, I have to admit the camera flash enhanced the brilliance of this picture somewhat.

The recapped power supply board. We managed to find some high-quality, long-life axial capacitors to replace the originals.
During the 1960's and 70's, Dynaco was a manufacturer of high-quality audio power amplifiers, preamplifiers, and tuners. Dynaco tube amplifiers are popular with many audiophiles.

Although the PAT-5 has a power switch, it is never really off! The power switch just controls the switched AC receptacles on the rear panel. I guess they expected the user to plug the power amplifier into the switched outlets. In the instruction manual, Dynaco claims that leaving the preamplifier powered at all times (you have no choice, unless you pull the power plug out of the receptacle) increases the life-expectancy of the internal components. I am highly skeptical of that. The original power supply capacitors in this preamplifier were in particularly bad condition.
